Animal Farm Corruption Essay - 1379 Words

Animal Farm, by George Orwell, is an allegorical novella depicting the Russian Revolution through the viewpoint of a revolution of farm animals against the owner of the farm. The revolution gives way to the pigs seizing a position of power on the farm. The pigs cement their claim to power through manipulating the other animals with force and their superior intellect. The pigs create an ideology for the animals on the farm to follow, and it begins as a message speaking of equality for all. Their power is eventually corrupted as they twist these ideals to further their agenda and make the farm their own. The pigs become corrupted to such a point that they even begin to mimic the humans that they once fought against, dressing like the†¦show more content†¦Soon after the animals gain control over the farm, the pigs develop a philosophy that is to be the guiding principles of how the animals live their lives on the farm. This philosophy is reduced to seven commandments to make it simpler for the uneducated animals to understand. With the pigs being the only educated animals on the farm, they are the only ones who are able to interpret these rules and say how they should be followed. The first violation of these rules comes when the pigs begin sleeping in the farmhouse, just as Mr. Jones had once done. For many of the animals they are somewhat alarmed by this, as demonstrated when Clover asks Muriel to confirm the commandment for her. â€Å"‘Muriel†¦ read me the fourth commandment.’... ‘No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets.’†(79) Unbeknownst to the animals, what Muriel has read out is a revised version of this commandment. To assure that there will be no further questioning on the matter, the pigs send in Squealer to convince the animals that this is how it had always been. He shames them into ever questioning the loyalty of the pigs to the farm and to the rebellion, claiming once again that what they are doing is only for the greater good of the farm. However, these changes come about solely for the benefit of the pigs. In Robert Browning’s dramatic monologue, â€Å"The Last Duchess†, he uses the painting as a symbolism of the Duke’s relationship with his former wife. Therefore, as the Duke tries to impress people with his wealth through the painting of Fra Pandolf, he instead unintentionally displays his true personality to others. Initially, the painting is used to reveal Duke’s jealous nature as he mistakes his wife’s friendless as flirting which later reveals his controlling nature. Expenses are also charged against revenues in the determination of profit based upon the historic cost of the assets used up in generating the revenues. This system was developed long ago during decades of relatively stable price levels and continued to be used before the consequences of inflation on the preparation of financial accounts were recognised. The principle advantage claimed for historical cost accounting (HCA) (and incidently until the development of CPP and CCA accounting was simply referred to as accounting, it only being recently that the traditional form of accounting has been distinguished by calling it HCA) is that it enables the preparation of accounts on an objective basis. However, it will suggest that in considering techniques for allowing for inflation the accounting profession should not be eager to let objectivity be the overriding consideration when formulating ground rules for the preparation of financial statements, since even the existing system of HCA frequently proves to be wanting as far as the possibility of achieving pure objectivity is concerned. Current cost measurements may provide useful information about assets that are held by a business as well as those that are used or sold. If the current cost that is the specific price of an asset has increased, it may be because the asset can be used to earn more than previously therefore people are willing to pay more. Thus, increase in the current cost of assets held by a company may provide a clue to the increases in the cash flow and earnings that the assets will be able to generate in the future. It is likely to be a better basis for assessing future cash flow than historical cost information but it must be interpreted with an appreciation of the economics of the industry in which the business concerned operates. Purchasing Power of Money Under inflation (or deflation) the value of money, its general purchasing power, is the reciprocal or the general level of prices. If all prices rise at the same rate, the holder of a given set of goods would gain by the rise in price and lose by the fall in the value of the money unit in which prices are expressed; the gain and the loss would be offsetting. But nothing would offset the loss in the purchasing power of money in respect of net monetary items (cash and receivables less payables), which are commonly exchangeable at their nominal amounts. In the more general case, the prices of non-monetary assets do not vary uniformly, nor consistently with changes in the value of money; and the asset compositions of firms, as between monetary and non-monetary assets, vary. These variations have differential impacts on firms. Further, a change in the price of any good may be in part due to a change in the relativities of the prices of goods, and in part due to a change in the general purchasing power of money. To what extent those changes affect severally any pri ce is unknown, even to buyers and sellers; and they, in any case, deal on the basis of prices as they stand from time to time whatever their causes. But periodical income calculation was different matter. To know what person could consume or firms could distribute in a period without impairing their financial capitals would be a guide to prudent behavior. According to Sweeney advanced stabilized accountingfor that purpose (various papers, and in 1936, Stabilised Accounting). Stabilised accounting dealt with income calculation by reference to the maintenance of real capital, dated general purchasing power, deriving the stabilized accounts from customary HCA accounts by use of a general price index. Such schemes would later be called Current Purchasing Power or CPP accounting. HCA does not yield a balance sheet representing the moneys worth of non-monetary assets. Where depreciation charges are based on calculations and inventory charges are based on any such rule as valuation a t the lower of cost and market, neither those charges nor the resulting asset balances are price indicative of moneys worth. Monetary liabilities are obligations to pay fixed amounts of money in the future. Causes of Price Level Changes It is useful to ask whether price level changes come solely from inflationary or deflationary effects. And the answer would be no and it is found that price level changes are made up from three major components. These are: scarcity ,i.e. supply and demand factors; changes in technology and cost factors. From the combination of the effects of these three factors will come the total price level change in which it is virtually impossible to isolate completely any effects of the other factors from inflationary or deflationary component. Because any of these factors may be working on price levels even in times of general price stability there will still be changes in relative prices. For example, The retail price index might remain stable, yet there may have been an increase in the price of services, an area where production is generally labour intensive, which was compensated for by decrease in the price of consumer durables, produced using capital intensive methods of production. Thus it becomes important that any system developed to adjust accounts for changes in price levels must be able to cope with the possibility of prices in different factor and product groupings changing at different rates. This paper will attempt to discuss some of the effects hormones, biological, and environmental factors have on an individual’s sexuality. When a baby is born usually the first statement out of the doctor’s mouth is â€Å"it is a boy† or â€Å"it is a girl†. Society has traditionally believed one is born either male or female. If one is born male he is expected to be masculine, be attracted to women, and to pursue hobbies and behaviors considered to be manly. If one is born female she is expected to be feminine, to be attracted to men, and to pursue hobbies and behaviors considered to be feminine. Occasionally an individual may be born with nonconforming gender identity. What this means is an individual may be born with male or female genitalia but actually have interest and behaviors of the opposite sex. For individuals with this conflicting belief life may be extremely painful. Society deems one either male or female and has developed certain schemas for each gender. However one’s emotional gender identity may be contrary to what society has deemed the individual. A single sperm cell which fertilizes an ovum, or egg, is called a zygote. A zygote contains all the information essential for the normal growth of a complete adult organism in its natural environment (Pinel, 2009). The zygote contains 23 pairs of chromosomes; half from the producer of the sperm and half from the producer of the egg. The cells of females only have the X chromosome, the cells of males have X and Y chromosomes; this means the male is responsible for the sex of the zygote (Pinel, 2009). A male zygote will have X and Y chromosomes while a female zygote will have only X chromosomes. Males and females produce the same hormones, androgens and estrogens, in different amounts. Males produce more testosterone, which is the most common androgen, and females produce more estradiol, which is the most common estrogen. Around the sixth week of gestation the Y chromosome of the male triggers the Sry protein which causes the primordial gonad to develop into a testis; in the absence of the Sry protein the primordial gonads automatically develop into ovaries (Pinel, 2009). Throughout the gestation period various other hormones are released to prompt the development of male or female genitalia. On occasion if the embryo is exposed to conflicting hormones there may be genital abnormalities. With the advances in medical technology it is possible for expectant parents to identify the sex of their unborn child. Once sex has been determined parents begin purchasing gender specific clothes, toys, and nursery items. This innocent act of the expectant parents begins the gender identity of an unborn child (Eliza, 2011). Traditional families, a mother, a father, and one or more children, is fast becoming a rarity in today’s society. Modern families may consist of two mothers, two fathers, a single parent male or female, or perhaps a grandparent. The environment in which a child is reared has some bearing on his or her sexual preference. A child reared in a traditional family, by grandparents, or perhaps by a single heterosexual parent may be encouraged to participate in gender specific play and to conform to gender specific roles. These children may also be corrected or disciplined when engaging in play or behaviors perceived to be in conflict with his or her gender. Whereas a child reared in a homosexual environment may be allowed or encouraged to explore his or her emotions of sexuality. Homosexuality has become more prevalent in today’s society; this could be a result in society’s tolerance of homosexuality and laws passed to ensure the equal treatment of homosexuals. The author tends to believe society’s tolerance of homosexuality has encouraged more individuals to express their homosexual tendencies. In times of the ancient Greek homosexuality and bisexuality were considered natural and normal. The increase in the popularity of Christianity was one of the major factors which affected society’s view of homosexuality. Christians considered homosexuality a sin and condemned the practice of homosexuality. However, the increase in gay rights and the implementation of policies which force society to tolerate homosexuality, such as laws against discrimination, has changed the view of homosexuality. Society has taken the subject of homosexuality away from being a moral issue and turned it into a personal preference. Through the readings of this course it is the author’s belief homosexuality is both a matter of choice and also an issue of biological abnormalities. The case studies found within the text indicate a stronger correlation between hormones and sexual preference. The case of the Twin Who Lost His Penis indicated the individual’s sexuality was imprinted from early childhood. The loss of his penis and his being forced to be raised as a girl had no bearing on his male tendencies. Despite the fact he was forced to live like a girl he always â€Å"felt† like a boy. It is the opinion of the author biological factors plays a stronger role in determining ones sexuality. Environmental factors such as society’s view of homosexuality have also played an important role in the acceptance of such behavior. Through the ages society has dictated the types of behaviors and actions which are acceptable and â€Å"normal†. A generation ago smoking was acceptable and homosexuality was considered abnormal. Today’s society says smoking is unacceptable and homosexuality is normal. The brain plays a huge role on the sexual behavior of male and female. The hypothalamus and the amygdale are parts of the brain that control sexual functioning. It is also clear that your environment can have a critical effect in producing sex and gender differences. I feel have all the brain functioning as it should does help to make the right choice. The brain has so many parts and if something is off it can cause a person to not be able to function proper. I know if a person has emotional problems this will effect everything about that person even who they are. I feel if the person can get the right medication then they can begin to feel better and learn who they are. The effects of gender go beyond the mere biological fact because men and women do not have the same roles like a woman is stereotyped as a housewife, secretary and mother you do not see many men with this stereotype. In the world today this has changed some but it does still go on. To me I feel that the way you grow will be the strongest effect on what gender you choose because I know that parents are usually the example that a child will follow. If a child grows with parents that tell them all the time I wished you would have be a girl and you are a boy you will begin to hate who you are and want to change your gender to please your parents. It has found that exposure to international internships, cultures, and people from different counties helps build many skills collectively known as cultural IQ or CQ. Cultural intelligence and education have been found to mold the personality and behavior in which a manager operates in the dynamic international arena (Eisenberg et. al, 2013). CQ was found to be one of the top requirements needed to land jobs and be employable in the international management market (Stahl Brannen, 2013). Hence great emphasis has to be paid during management training to develop ones CQ. I feel I am in the nascent stage of developing my CQ but more work needs to be done. Skills needed to bloom There are several necessary skills to be developed. One has to know the perspective, job fit, contexts of your role, the entire interlinking of the business, and the long-term goal plan. One has to learn to be resilient, persevering, and always learning and sharing at work. Team work and working under supervision with management and good communication and soft skills are also, I feel needed to excel (Jones George, 2015). Today an understanding of culture and how to fit into a companys culture or your future clients culture is also worth mentioning. One has to do a lot of research in understanding what type of person the negotiator is? What is his management style? The companys communication is it direct? Are they formal? What type of deals is suited in a country? What is the work ethics? These are a few. The bottom line is skilled research will help one prepare for any eventuality when conducting business or managing staff in an international setting (Ben-Hur, 2013). As a well read student I feel quite comfortable in this setting. The skills set that I feel I need to develop the most are active listening. Here a person learns to communicate well. Keep a conversation or discussion going and participate fully in it.
